About Me I'm a copy editor by day. I spend my free time keeping my hands busy -- get that mind out of the gutter! -- by sewing, knitting, embroidering or drawing. Though I try to keep in shape, I'm a notorious couch potato (a quality I gladly share with my beloved greyhound, Zoe).
Music My musical tastes run the gamut, but I'll list a few that are somewhat in keeping with this community's theme: Dead Can Dance, Corvus Corax, Delirium, Medieval Baebes, Loreena McKennitt, E Muzeki, Gypsy Kings, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and some nice relaxing classical/instrumental music (particularly guitar and harp).
Movies Orlando (a period costumer's wet dream), The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, Lady Jane, Shakespeare in Love, more to come...
TV I'm a sucker for hokey prime-time drama. I used to be a huge CSI fan, but they've failed me so far this season. At the moment, I'm really into Terminator: The Sara Conner Chronicles and Moonlight.
Books The Herbert Norris costume histories, "Lapsing Into a Comma" by Bill Walsh, "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" by Mary Roach, "Hood" by Stephen R. Lawhead, anything by Sara Waters
Likes honesty, wordplay, puns, potty humor, corsets, dogs, food, tea, good cheap wine, movies, blankets, veggies, smoothies, hugs, head scritches, long hair, Renaissance, Tudor, Victoriana, morbid history, swords, Spanish
Dislikes unwarranted snarkiness, Ann Coulter, water chestnuts, fake flavors
Hobbies knitting, sewing, costuming, hennaing my hair,
Vices if it's tasty, it's my vice
Virtues I can hand-grommet a bodice faster than you can say "spring steel." I make a mean guacamole. I like to be helpful. If you ask my opinion, I'll give it. (Heck, sometimes I'll give it even if you don't ask for it!)

Fairever Pass and Last-Minute Costuming Insanity

    Friday, July 18, 2008, 10:10 AM [General]

Wahoo! I ordered my season pass on Monday, and lo and behold, it was waiting for me in the mailbox yesterday afternoon. Impressive turnaround, I thought.

Who else has got theirs? I can't believe we're just barely over a month till opening day.

The costuming bug has finally bitten me in the rump and prompted some feverish cutting and sewing. Honestly, why in the heck can't I get motivated for this stuff in, oh, FEBRUARY?!

I've got quite a few things on my plate already: a shirt and doublet for my little brother, finally finishing up my hubby's pirate coat and vest, and, of course, I can't forget to make a little something for myself. I'm hoping to whip together a few quick summer blouses for comfort and coolness. Ones that I can throw in the wash and keep in rotation, ya know? Also want to try my hand a slightly more period outfit. Bought some lovely 100% linen for a working class kirtle.

I used to think it was all about showing off the skillz, parading my best efforts about for everyone to appreciate. But, you know? I've learned it's really about having a great time among friends and keeping comfortable. And you just can't get comfortable in proper stays, a bum roll, farthingale and all sundry of hardware under heavy velvets and brocades. (At least I can't. More power to you if you can.)

Anyone working on some interesting projects? Do tell.

    Apparently, it's Int'l Wear-a-Kilt Day. Who knew?

My colleague -- and fellow kilt devotee -- alerted me that today, Feb 15, is International Wear-a-Kilt Day. http://kiltday.com/ Who knew? I certainly didn't. Too bad there's not many kilt-wearing chaps round these parts.

I'll appreciate them all the better come faire season, I suppose. Show me those beautiful, manly calves, gents!

The site above also supports No Pants Day. I'm delighted to hear of such an event. I think it should also include celebratory pancake eating and perhaps a grand fluffy couch, whereupon my pantsless bottom will plant itself the entire day for a Sean Connery movie marathon! Yay!
